James Duncan Davidson from Inside Lightroom blog has posted some interesting gamut plots of the new LED 15″ MacBook Pro laptop. James compared the new 15″ LED based laptop against his older first generation 17″ MacBook Pro and the 23″ Cinema display. You might want to also read Rob Galbraith’s analyses.

Ian Burley of Digital Photography Now has started a new website just for Four Thirds digital SLR cameras. You may find some very interesting information there, we particularly liked this article about Image Stabilisation. It also shows what happens when you fit the OIS Leica Vario Elmarit 14-50mm on the E-510 (IS vs Leica OIS).

Leica has today released firmware update version 1.107 for the Leica M8. According to Leica “The changes within the firmware version allows Leica Camera an even saver and more efficient production process. Furthermore, by modification of internal procedures, optimization of the general image reproduction and the functional features of the LEICA M8 has been accomplished.”
We are not yet sure what “general image reproduction” means, we need to get the Leica M8 back into the lab and find out. We’ll try to update you as soon as we can. The new firmware is available here.

We have a new top story! After many hours of testing the Canon EOS 1D Mark III we have an in-depth evaluation of Canon’s new top notch noise reduction algorithm, performed by the new DIGIC III. Many camera makers and RAW software makers have a lot to learn. Canon has done a wonderful job with the image processing part of this camera. Cllick here for “Canon EOS 1D Mark III – Image Quality Redefined”.

update: easyrgb.com is back online! At some point in the last few days easyrgb.com was taken down never to comeback. We used easyrgb.com quite a lot as a reference to color conversion formulas. It had all the most needed formulas in a single page organized really well. It also featured a cool color conversion calculator which helped us many times in the past. Luckily, web.archive.org is keeping an archive of easyrgb.com which makes the color formulas still accessible. If anyone knows what happened to easyrgb.com let us know. What a shame!

The image on the left is the RAW data at its bayer format from the Nikon D200. The image on the right is the RAW data at its bayer format from the Leica M8. one is brighter then the other even though they both will look the same with any Raw software, such as [...]

KammaGamma is not one of those regular camera review sites. So we are not going to talk about the body of the camera that much. This news page is a good place for me to talk a bit about new cameras we get to review. And the last of which is the new Leica DIGILUX 3. I took the Digilux 3 to my recent trip to hungary, so that was a real world test for the design of the body. I am sorry to say I just couldn’t get used to the way the Digilux 3 is designed. Yes it looks terrific, but the layout of the buttons are somewhat different from most cameras.

At the time of writing this article, our digital photography world is going through a change. A big change. Camera makers are finally starting to apply their noise reduction algorithms with some innovation. This is coming from a need to produce better high ISO images than ever. Sensor makers are trying (and encouraged) to [...]

There is no doubt that our databases are a unique feature, so we are going to take that further. I wanted to let you guys know that we are working on some new databases that are going to blow your mind! I don’t want to say much, this image here is just a small nice teaser of a new plot in the works (due to change). I hope we’ll get it online soon. There is a lot to look forward to!

It will be interesting to compare these two cameras at 1600 ISO and see if Nikon has set the noise reduction algorithms different according to the camera’s predicted audience.

I just came back from Canon after a few days of getting to know the Canon EOS 1D MKIII. I have so much to say about the image quality! unfortunately, I can’t – yet. I am a bit disappointed from the fact DIGIC III is so slow when the Noise reduction option is set to ON. The number of images you can take with this option ON reduces significantly. This is not something a camera maker usually does…

When the first version of Lightroom was finally released I was thrilled like everybody else. But I was also very interested to find out if adobe has done anything new with the default colors of the image. (There is a really good reason for me wondering that, which might be covered in a separate [...]

A database of noise readings from cameras we tested. Test cameras are included in the tags.
Large numbers of noise reduction algorithms and patents are available. Camera makers use the algorithms that they developed for their cameras and RAW software. During the years that I’ve been following the market it seems to me that all those algorithms have one thing in common – they all work on the RGB [...]
The Nikon D200 and the Canon EOS 5D are very different cameras. The Canon EOS 5D has a full frame 12.8MP CMOS censor while the Nikon D200 uses a 10MP CCD.
There are further differences inside the camera, the Canon EOS 5D uses the same old DIGIC II image pipeline where the Nikon D200 uses Nikons [...]
